Saw this in a local supermarket. Says it's brewed in Germany on the label. How does this square with the Rheinhheitsgebot?
Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole* (maybe with a feckin long straw if desperate though) but interested in the answer. Udo?

They just call it "beer with lemon", which apparently satisfies the Reinheitsgebot. I wouldn't go anywhere near it, either. _________________ "His first kick was a header and he missed it."

You rang milord?
Yeah, weird ain't it? I came across something similar at the last of the proper Love Parades; Warsteiner were selling cans of their beer with added lemon or cola... just the thought of the taste made me feel weird (but that might have been the pharms thinking about it ) and I made the self-same query you did.
Still I did like the idea of getting beer tokens in exchange for returning your empties and not littering the streets.
I miss proper Warsteiner. It doesn't taste the same since their failed attempt at world domination... _________________ Lover, Poet, Philosopher, Drunk and Bore...All in five easy pint shaped pieces. |

Whern I was in Germany the other month I had a Wheat Beer/Cola mix. I knew I shouldn't had done it but was intrigued. It was, as you may have guessed, horrible. |

i've never put much stock in this Rheinhheitsgebot nonsense as have had plenty of crap beer brewed in Germany. Becks itself is rubbish, adding lemon will probably improve the taste! |

Things could be worse...in some rural north German areas some people like to mix wheat beer and banana juice.
I always had to firmly draw the line there. You don’t have to try everything once in your life... _________________

Boozing in Freiburg this weekend.....
The draught Ganter pils in Club Atlantic was awful. The Rothaus beer at the stadium was a bit better. The weisse bier around town was good as usual but I can't drink much of that. Had some alt beer in the Club Atlantic on Sunday which was actually quite good but drank bottles of Freiburger pils mostly. The rounds of jagermeister shots appeared to temporarily cure my cough however. _________________ 'The tragedy of humanity is not in the script; the tragedy is that there is no script'

You're right Les, the standard Ganter draught pils certainly isn't the best in the world. They do make some decent beers though. Wodan is a double bock (though on sale all year round unlike some other bocks that are seasonal). The bottled Spezial pils is also a good one. I'm not sure which 'Freiburger' bottles we are drinking; there are two - one made by Ganter and one by an independent - though I suspect it would have been the former in the Atlantik.
It's a shame I didn't get to hang out with you chaps a little longer as Freiburg has two excellent 'brew-pubs,' Feierlings and Martinsbrau which are both within a few minutes' walk from the Atlantik.
Well, maybe next time....... |

It's quite simple. The beer laws apply only to beer. Becks make 'Green Lemon' but don't claim it's a beer, it's simply a drink called 'Beck's Green Lemon'. Don't use the word 'beer' on the bottle or in advertising and no law broken. Guinness has sold freely in Germany because it never claimed to be a beer, it's a 'Stout'. |

Talking of Becks, what the consensus on this Becks 4 that seems to be on draught a lot round these parts?
To me it just doesn't taste remotely like Becks proper. |

What? Greater even than Eusebio?
(OK, before someone pulls me, I know he was actually from Mozambique)
By the way, the all-year-round availability of Bock is a recent phenomenon. Originally it was brewed by monks for consumption during Lent. The idea being that the nutritional ingredients in Bock compensated for the lack of nutrition from fasting.
In Texas, bock is very popular, two local brands being Shiner and Siegen, due to Czech-German settlement in the region. |
