Going to show my ignorance here probably, but was looking on the club shop web site and saw a 'traditions' shirt that looks like an old St Pauli shirt with an Astra logo on middle?
Does anyone know what this shirt is and what the Astra logo is about?

Might be over explaining stuff here so apologies if Im telling you stuff you already knew.
The traditions shirt is just that, a retro style shirt. From my limited exposure to old photos of St Pauli, brown shorts and white shirts has often been just as popular as the brown and white stripes so I don’t think its as historically accurate as say a Toffs shirts might be.
Astra is the local brewery (and a very nice drop it is too!). They were very much focussed in the St Pauli area, Holsten being more popular (and arguably still is) the further away from the Viertel you get. Anyway Astra got into difficulties but was eventually bought by the Holsten Brewery (you can see it if you get the S-Bahn beyond Sternshanze in the direction of Altona to the Holstenstrasse stop). A slight rebranding took place (new anchor and heart logo) and it went back on sale. I heard that the owners of the bars and clubs on the Kiez insisted on persevering with Astra through its hard times, which would be quite remarkable if true. However Astra not folding probably meant that regular supplies just continued as normal. At least since this time, Astra and St Pauli have had quite a close relationship. When St Pauli got promoted to the Bundesliga they ran various St Pauli related Astra adverts in magazines and even had specially designed beer labels showing St Pauli men and women stripping (sort of drawn in a 1950’s style). When World of Internet went bust (well at least I think they did!), you could even get Astra iron-on logos to cover the old sponsor on the shirt. Now Astra’s headquarters have been demolished (they had a rather distinctive all be it run down office on the Hans Albers Platz side of town) all of their activity is no doubt run from Holsten’s headquarters but the St Pauli link still remains. Seeing whether someone (given the choice between the two) drinks Holsten or Astra can often be quite a reliable way of guessing whether they support HSV or St Pauli!
The Astra logo on the traditions shirt is just there to make the shirt more appealing, I don't believe they've been main shirt sponsor before (Boklunder, World of Internet, Securita, odd banks, Jack Daniels and Delta Radio have had that honour).
If you are after odd shirts, then keep an eye out for the Turbonegro shirt too. It’s a sort of tribute to the old Jack Daniels shirt of days gone by. Think they probably still have some in the club store... _________________ Geschunden durch den (Hamburg) Sport Verein....Samstag ist Selbsmord |

Astra were our shirt sponsor a few years ago, albeit for a short while only.
World of Internet went bust halfway through the 2000/2001 season. Astra then took over the shirt sponsorship for the rest of the season, a few months only.
We were promoted to the first division at the end of the season and the club held out for a shirt sponsor with a nationwide appeal. Astra - as FCUM Veg quite rightly pointed out - is a local brand and wouldn't be interested in pricey sponsorship for a first division team.
Needless to say, the replica shirts sold like no other shirt before _________________

I'll wear mine for the game on Sunday, under about 5 layers though! Like Zim I also drink Astra, Holsten, Becks etc regardless of football allegiance. I HAVE stopped drinking Duvel though ( see postings in 'Beer' section of the board) _________________ 'The tragedy of humanity is not in the script; the tragedy is that there is no script'

Little added bit. Apparently Astra did nearly go bust and were going to be bought out by a Dortmund based brewery (who would do what we do over here as in buy names and then brew a beer under that name). Anyway according to the German wikipedia, the city then bought the brewery under a temporary licence after a large public outcry. Think after that period it was then bought by Holsten. _________________ Geschunden durch den (Hamburg) Sport Verein....Samstag ist Selbsmord |

Sir Roger and I "accidentally" bought an Astra shirt on the day they were released - allegedly there were only 1000 or so produced. As a result they have become something of a collectors item, I believe.
Personally I thought we looked far better with Jack Daniels as our sponsor. That was COOL!!!!

Yup, specially when we played against Bayer Leverkusen. Jack Daniels vs. Aspirin! _________________ "His first kick was a header and he missed it."

Have a look on the German ebay site: Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! | and then search for 'st pauli trikot'.
There's a brand new Astra shirt on there as we speak, plus all the others mentioned above. Give a new home to an old unwanted kit! I've found most German sellers are quite happy to post to the UK. Even got one from Vienna to send an old photo of the great 1930s Schalke team by post and who accepted payment by cheque - there's trusting for you - and don't worry if your German's no good: Babelfish does the trick
Best item I picked up was a lovely photo from the early 1960s of FC St Pauli versus FC Borussia Neunkirchen - all brylcreemed hair and brown-white v-necked kits that were so common in that period. Only thing was, when it arrived it was the size of a Panini sticker. So be aware that some on-line translating sites are prone to miss the odd bit of information. _________________ Can you still have any famous last words if you're somebody nobody knows?
