Just thought you should know that 2 Polish men were stabbed to death in the Drimnagh suburb of Dublin over the weekend. This is a worrying development, although Ireland does not have an active far-right levels of racism are rising. Drimnagh is a working class area built in the 1930s/40s not far from where i'm from. There have been immigrants moving into the area over the past few years (as in other parts of the country), renting houses and flats. It appears that 3 teenagers attacked the men when they refused to buy alcohol for them (this is unconfirmed but is the general consensus of the media). Both were stabbed with a screwdriver, 1 in the head, the other in the neck. As in the UK teenagers are being attacked in the media as yobs and so on when actually resources are needed for youths to have an alternative to drinking/hanging around the streets which results in being harassed by the police. The media have been systematically portraying immigrants as criminals at every opportunity over the last 2 years or so (particularly people from east europe), and non EU immgrants as "spongers". The links below will provide some more info. The Indymedia link is a very positive development in combating the racists.

This is very sad...when you think of the discrimination that the Irish have suffered for centuries you would believe that racist views would not take hold there.......I think this is another indictment on western society and demonstrates a lacxk of values and education. _________________ freedom without Socialism is privilege and injustice... If that were the case, there wouldn't be a problem in 'Israel' would there? The Jews could teach the Irish a thing or two about being persecuted...
The problem in Ireland stems from, and this is only my belief, the fact that traditionally it's a country of emmigrants. Now the Irish are experiencing a lot of immigrants from (particularly) Poland, no doubt attracted by a bouyant economy, similair religion and - broadly speaking - an agricultural society similair to their own.
I wouldn't like to say if you'll see what the 'true' Irish attitudes towards other races and nationalities are now they are living next to them in their own country, but broadly speaking it's something they're not used to. I would add that there's little evidence to suggest that Irish people are somehow immune to racism, as Rebel_Bull has hoped. _________________ Can you still have any famous last words if you're somebody nobody knows?
I don't know...
Somebody go and ask Claire - she's been dead twenty years - just look at her hair. |

The Youths who stabbed these Polish men are nothing but Scum. These people are not right wing they are just scum.
Ireland I'm sorry to say has a short memory as it wasn't that long ago we travelled to all corners of this world looking for a new life. When people come to us to do the same we treat them with disrespect.
I might add not all Irish people think like this. |

Thanks for the post i think there is a lot more going on than just calling them scum, as we both live in the same town, have a look @ the way the cops treat teenagers who have no facilities, and so go to the beach to get pissed or stoned. Have a look @ the lack of affordable or council housing not built because the local authority along with all govts. believe "the market is the best way to allocate resources". In short thety don't believe in helping those who can't afford a home (that is a lot of people over the last 10 or so years of the Celtic Tiger). I could go on but this is a result of 15 years of "market solutions" to fix our problems, which have not worked. Examples: Eircom, Aer Lingus, Irish Ferries, Cost of Housing, Lack of Public Transport the list is long. I think we should look 4 ways to solve these problems to make peoples lives better so that this type of thing doesn't happen again. _________________ Football lefty have been supporter of St. Pauli since 2004. |

well, I see homeless people on Ha'penny bridge whenever I cross it at night. Otherwise, I won't comment on other economies, enough shite going on in Germany... _________________ Irish Folk&Rebel from St.Pauli:
