could never narrow it down to one brand...

- Guinness when in irish pub
- Astra when in St.Pauli
- there is one Hotel Restaurant in Speyer that has its own brilliant black beer... first time I was there I had 3.5 liters without really noticing til I tried to get up ... ;)

Generally, I am more into Rum and Whiskey lately.

Felin Foel Double Dragon - a great real ale for the beardies (k/a feeling foul locally, though it's luvly),
Old Rosie cider - you don't need LSD, this is halloosinating juice
Dark (dunkles) Einbecker Ur Bock
Flensburger Pilsner

A pal of mine was at the Durham Weatherspoon's Beer Festival (I couldn't make it) and phoned me to tell me about 2 beers that he said were superb. BTW He is a real beer anorak. Wink
They are:
1) California Brewery Stone Double IPA
2) Abbot Ale Reserve (7.5%ABV)

He seems to think that other branches of Weatherspoons might have them. I'll certainly watch out for them.

According to DJ it was called Yo Ho Tokyo Black, it was a porter and it was a masterpiece.

Might I suggest that you try (if you haven't already) 'O'Hanlons Original Port Stout'? Available from Sainsbury's in 500ml bottles, ABV 4.8% and one of the most delicious very dark beers I've had. The idea behind this beer is that it's meant to recreate the taste of the old Irish hangover 'cure' of putting a slug of port in a glass of stout as a reviver. The beer is bottle conditioned and has won CAMRA awards and such like if these things impress you. I'm not given to DJ's hyperbole but this a beer where one savours every mouthful.
Cheers! I'm just off to open my second of the evening.

Well, assuming I get over to the Aachen game with the other SE/London reprobates this not-so-young man's springtime fancy will be a (good) few bottles of Maibock.

Unfortunately, like a St Pauli winning streak it is only produced for a few weeks of the year...

Tell me more......... Very Happy

Given that St Pauli are on their winning streak, and May is just around the corner I'll buy you a bottle when we meet up!

There's a bar in Cardiff holding a Maibock Festival from 11th to 13th May this year; for the unitiated their website also explains a little about the seasonal beers brewed under that name:

It's held annually in the Chapter Arts Centre, Canton nr the centre of Cardiff. There's always a good range of beers, bottled and draught. Well recommended.

Chapter's always worth a visit, even if most of the people who go there have their heads up their arses. Live music, alternative theatre and films, veggie food (sorry - no Bratwurst here) and always a good range of real ales and foreign beers, in fact I'll be there tonight!

We used to hold a German "Stammtisch" (locals table) in the Canton Hotel opposite. This still runs and is held Tuesdays in the Vulcan (opposite Cardiff prison!), if you fancy a chat in German next time you're in Cardiff.
