I get some tickets for the UEFA-Cup Final in Manchester. Teams are shit but i think of going. Cheap flights are only into London, so what coud i do on the way from London to Manchester if i go a few days?
Any tourist sights, special recommendations on Hostels, places to walk in mountains (are there any mountains), nice place on a seashore without making big distances for that.
Thanks for any advices!

Hi Heiko.

Make sure you pre-book your train from Lndon Euston-Manchester Piccadilly. Hopefully you'll be able to get a return for £26 (often better to pre-book two single journey tickets). The journey takes about 2 hours 20 minutes on weekdays. Sometimes longer at weekends.

If you like walking then the Peak District south of Manchester could be for you:

The West Pennine Moors or Saddleworth could appeal too, though this is more hilly than mountainous:

These are all around Manchester.

As for the seaside, you'd really have to go beyond Manchester for that.

If you haven't been before, Blackpool is an experience you might not forget in a hurry! Shocked Very Happy

If you want any more tips just shout.

Cheers, Andy.

We will rent a car so we will have no problem to get to this places.
Peak District sounds good.

Any advice on B&B in Manchester for the game or around? I prefer family owned, nice small hotels or B&B with good regional food....

Hi Heiko,

Have a look at the Manchester tourism website. Details of where to stay and places to visit -

Details of all the national parks in the UK on this site (if you like it a little hillier than Hamburg!)

Well, I'm off to Terminal 5 now for my flight to Hamburg! Hopefully I'll arrive on Friday, even if my bag has to go via China...

You'll have no trouble then. The Lake District is only a 90 minute drive from Manchester too. Now that does have mountains.

I'm not sure about good, but I'm sure we can do the regional bit. Black puddings, tripe, greasy chips, sausage barms, steak and kidney puddings and an Eccles Cake if you're still feeling peckish! Wink

Like Toom says, check out the tourist pages. I couldn't recommend anywhere to say unfortunately.

I'm not sure if Germany has anywhere quite like Blackpool. It's certainly an experience. About an hour's drive from Manchester. It's very easy to get to.

How long will you be staying Heiko? How many people are coming with you? If you fancy the Lake District give me a shout we can try and meet up.
The Football League museum can be found at Preston North End's ground. This is worth a visit, Preston is not far from Manchester. I'm sure the museum is free to get into.

If you head to the lake district, there's the 'Homes of Football' exhibition in Ambleside.... Never been but photography looks good...

I've been to both the Football museum at Preston and the Homes of Football in Ambleside. Both well worth a visit IMHO.

If you're looking for mountain scenery that you don't have to share with 8 million other tourists then southern Snowdonia is a good bet and not much further from Manchester than the Lake District (and not completely in the opposite direction to London). The northern area around Betws-y-coed/Llanberis/Beddgelert is nearly as busy as the Lake District but head for the area around Bala/Dolgellau/Barmouth/Tywyn and it's much quieter. Excellent beaches too if you make it as far as the coast.
