Sadly I don't think we'll see any similar 'direct action' on the streets of London in response to that buffoon Johnson being elected mayor.

The mind buckles!

I wish I felt as optimistic. A police cordon separated the 100 or so anarchist/direct democracy protestors from a large number of celebrating BNP supporters, and about 10:30pm after the police thought they had broken the back of the protest by forcing the demonstrators down sidestreets there were a number of scuffles with the BNP, but it seems the anarchists were forced to flee after a crowd of "football casuals" waded in to assist the BNP supporters.

Will people never learn... Brick wall

I was being a little 'tongue-in-cheek.' The whole fiasco just beggars belief.

Yes, I know it was expected that Brown and his chums would get a kicking, but surely not of this magnitude. Great!!! At least they`ll think twice now (hopefully)
At least with the Tories, you know what you`re getting, you know they`ll be bastards of the highest order. This lot are just traitors , and deserve to burn in hell.

Talking of which, on this day in history.......
1979: Margaret Thatcher becomes Britain's first female prime minister following a landslide election victory.

To anyone living in London.

What were the political alternatives during the election and is there any explanation as to why the far right are so successful in parts of London?

I recall reading not so long ago that over 30% of the population of Central London was non white so is just seems strange to me how the far right can gain seats year after year.

Sorry, joining the discussion late - my computer had a nervous breakdown, probably a belated reaction to Bo Jo becoming mayor and the BNP gaining a seat on the General Assembly!

You will find an interesting election blog at Searchlight's HOPE Not Hate Campaign:

The BNP seems to gain in areas which are predominantly white working class in background, but with many immigrants having moved to the area. The reason is that they have become very clever in portraying themselves as a party with serious politics and they do prey on the genuine fears of ordinary people who are worried over losing jobs due to the "wage war" that price undercutting brought with cheap labour from new EU countries.

They dress up their nasty anti-immigration and anti-asylum seekers policies in such a way that the people who are worried they're losing out to immigrants then think they've found a friend in a time of need, believing the lies of overcrowding and asylum seekers sponging off the state.

The National Front has also been busy handing out their propaganda in parts of London, but their "policies" are far more openly racist while the BNP cleverly disguise their real intentions.

However, if the NF and the BNP want to return all the immigrants, whether new or second/third/forth generation diaspora, then really it should also work the other way round and all Brits living abroad should be requested to move back to not-so-Great Britannia. This, however, would be more likely to result in overcrowding since more people leave Britain than there are moving to Britain!

As Attila says in "Asylum Seeking Daleks" - Immigrants, welcome here - you racists, emigrate! Wink

I wouldn't really wish t inflict the NF or the BNP on any other country, so possibly the moon would be a good place for them. At least as far as I know there aren't any lifeforms there they could possibly upset!

As to political alternatives, the LibDems had Brian Paddick as their mayoral candidate, but unfortunately he and any other alternative didn't get a look in as most people always seem to switch back to the Tories if the Labour Party doesn't deliver without giving any other party a chance. I myself voted Mayor of London: Ken, second choice: green, local council: green, London Assembly: green!

Interesting points you make mate. Sounds similar to what they do in the rest of the country was just a bit supprised with London. Maybe 20 odd years ago but it seems to be much more of a melting pot now.
