This pretty much sums up my feelings towards Banksy:

My mild irritation at his fairly witless detourned iconography became outright dislike when I discovered that he wasn't above "sending the boys round" to threaten and menace some guys who were attempting to hold an exhibition in a squatted Hackney space whom he felt had "dissed" him.
I also love the apocryphal Popbitch tale where Banksy finished his mural on the Palestinian wall and a local onlooker walked up to him as he was admiring his handiwork and said: "Well done. You've made the wall look pretty. Now go home".
Its not big and its not clever and I reserve my admiration for the New York and London anarchists who've taken to splashing paint over his work and duplicating his signature beside any old piece of crap grafitti.

I don t mix art and politics , all he has done is drawing / painting ...
he hasn t said a word I think
People make assumptions from his work , that s where the debate comes in. Everyone is allowed to think differently and accordingly I accept your comments Udo , but I still think his stufff is rather impressive and desreves to be praised . |

Art and politics Anth?
'Guernica' by Picasso. A bit 'old school' now but radical in his time. Throughout history artists have been social commentators. Hogarth anyone?
Banksy thinks he is. Hmm......
Graffitti art is valid social comment in context but when you're paid vast amounts of cash and adopted by the glitterati it tends to 'dilute' or even distort the message, n'est-ce pas?
IMHO he's a pretentious twat but hey, each to his own...... We can't all be Brian Sewell and I'm not from London after all. _________________ 'The tragedy of humanity is not in the script; the tragedy is that there is no script'

There is a "Banksy" just two minutes from where I'm sitting typing this - opposite Dominoes Pizza at Chalk Farm. This one:

Tourists flock to have their picture taken with it whilst The Roundhouse is it's unofficial caretaker, looking after it and painting over any graffiti that might appear next to/on it!!!
The absurdity of a piece of Graffiti being kept clear of pieces of Graffiti never ceases to amaze.

I said I wasn't mixing art and politics.
Yes there are messages in each art of work , not only his , but now can anyone say exactly what he tries to say through his works?
Maybe a few things like , I hate the police etc... But I d say he' s actually turned this into a cat n mouse game with coppers , rather than hate...
He 's always tried to have an unknown face , a bit like daft punk.
I really like street art , but apreciate more graf artist as loomit who tends to be more artistic with sprays , rather than stencils. |
