And another thing, would I be right that the Fanladen are hosting an 'english' night next week, complete with 'hooligan videos'?

Perhaps 'hooligan' has a different connotation in German than it does in English? _________________ Martin Taylor is Innocent |

as it was organised by the Übersteiger fanzine you can bet it was very St.Pauli. didn't manage to get out of King Calavera so I don't know what went on, just saw some folks with some kind of "England" batches at the Jolly Roger later... _________________ Irish Folk&Rebel from St.Pauli:

Well, as one of the guys organizing this evening I can assure you it was completely harmless. Just our way to express, that we didn't care about 'schland progressing or not progressing in the semifinal against Turkey. Was a brilliant opportunity to try out English food and taste the awfulness of baked beans with pork sausages. That strongbow cider with sugar was an excellent and cheap way to get drunken.
As a German I have to admit that I do have a soft spot for England. But not the England for what it is, but what it could be. And we should never forget who freed Northern Germany from Hitler's tyranny and put that lovely game of football forward. But that's just my point of view, among the Übersteiger there are also persons, who dislike England if it pleases you more.
Those England batches were old-school rosettes which caused some irritations among certain 'schland-Fans who had their party on the Heiligengeistfeld.
That guy with the hooligan tapes didn't show up, so we had to watch Ken Loach's "Golden Vision" - there is only one hooligan in the complete film I have to admit.
BTW: Hooligan is a word of German origin, comes from the German word "Hugenseppel":

Nice one Welf.
Had I been in Germany, I really would like to have attended the night but as my original post tried to say, I was a bit confused by the 'hooligan' bit. We've had to put up with a significant hooligan minority for 30 odd years at Birmingham and they are a total and utter pain in the arse. I think I was surprised that Ubersteiger would put on anything related to hooliganism, but I obviously got the whole thing wrong - I think that my thin skin and naiveity misinterpreted the whole thing!
And never mind sausage and beans. Have you ever tried or seen the full English breakfast you can get in a can? A truly remarkable feast. And as for Pot Noodles... _________________ Martin Taylor is Innocent |

Well, that hooligan bit is a strange thing. I do know of quiet a lot sensible people who are somehow fascinated by them now they are more a thing of a past. Those books about the big firms in the 70s/80s are read by many people.
However our point was to create an evening of cliches. Everything the normal German relates with England. Distasteful food, nice sweets (Everton tofffees are marvelous - they must be after all I am a bit biased there ). for a moment we've even thought about bringing a subbuteo pitch to the Fanladen but decided against it. Just Tea, ale, cider, rosettes and hooligans (or at least we planned it that way).
Though some believe hooliganism is in fact of German origin:

Subbuteo? Now you're talking! Have you ever come across Striker? It was a poor equivalent - the figures were bigger and you used to push down the head to make them kick. Trouble was the ball used to either go half an inch or flying off into the distance.
Do you think you'll be having another English night soon? _________________ Martin Taylor is Innocent |

Subbuteo was/is superior to Striker in every respect.
Do they still make Subbuteo? _________________ freedom without Socialism is privilege and injustice... Socialism without freedom is slavery and brutality |

It's been suggested that that's actually Clydebank. |

Striker? You mean this?

It's a German invention and popular here. I don't like it.
Always liked subbuteo, however it was always difficult to find other players here in Germany. Like collecting things so buying different teams was it for me. But these days it's just star players as cardboard figures (it's ironic that subbuteo started with cardboard players back in the 40s - don't know about the first players in the 20s). So I don't care anymore and buying old stuff on e bay is way too expensive and I am already collecting enough weird things.
It's only Clydebank: Well for much of the time subbuteo just produced replicas of British teams. As the European market became more important they just added new team names on the team boxes.
St. Pauli would be very difficult as there were no brown teams - just claret. The first team officially branded as also St. Pauli was that of Real Madrid back in the late 70s. At that time St. Pauli often played in plain white (in fact more often than in brown). But still you can use acrylic paints to change their kits. Did this with my HSV-team (which was in fact Walsall, no blue sockets there), painted their skin in dark brown, changed their whit shirts for green and gave them yellow sockets - all back in 1990.
Don't think we'll ever repeat our English night (it was a lot of fun, but those things should never be repeated). But if your interested one of us is planning brown and white rosettes with a St. Pauli badge. If you want to order one feel free to do so. _________________ keep Everton in our city!
