This should be in the Links section but I put it here as I guess it's more use here:

Not a session beer then....

Depends on how long the session is, Les: the Jilly Gouldenesque reviewer at

recommends laying it down for a couple of years (and presumably lying down for a bit afterwards too).

I like the review. Here's mine:

Very dark brown body almost like a coffee gives way to a surprisingly frothy beige coloured head. The aroma is stout-like with a hint of christmas pudding. First taste gives an explosion of chocolate and mocha with marzipan and toffee in there before the phenols hit the roof of your mouth and scurry into your nostrils. Then the malt crashes into the back of your throat and careers on down your gullet dragging a liquorice afterthought behind it. A hint of cherries and fudge taints your saliva until the next mouthful. Second sip yields cough drops at the sides of your mouth and the alcohol vapours are coming back to play just inside your lips. Fuck heroin, I could become addicted to this!*
Superb, wonderful, transcendental. Knocks Chimay Grand Reserve off the top of the pile for me. There is a God. He loves us, that's why he gave us the Trappists. Wink Only joking! (or am I?)

* £3:09 from Beers of Europe Ltd.

OK, let's see.

Coffee, christmas pudding, chocolate, mocha, marzipan, toffee.

Liquorice.

Cherries, fudge and cough drops.

That's not a beer, that's a sugar addict's breakfast! (Wouldn't get past the Reinheitsgebot of 1516, either.) Razz

I defy anybody to compose a more OTT beer review than that! Laughing C'mon lets see what you can manage. This board has the creative muscle to do the biz....

That sounds like you're throwing down the gauntlet there... Can I make a corrollary rule and suggest that any putative reviewers stick to a beer we all know (otherwise fabulists like me have a decided advantage!)

Just bought a case of 24 330ml bottles of Warsteiner for £15 at Makro. It was on 'special offer'. I thought it looked like a good buy.

Not tonight though (alcohol free day to allow body to recover from this week Shocked Laughing ) Maybe tomorrow after I finish my paper on the comparative educational attainment of looked-after children...

Maybe you'll find the complexity Astro and his mates missed. I like it anyway; my putative review will be tinned red stripe Wink

IMHO it's reminiscent of the better Czech pilsners and is a bit more 'hoppy' than a lot of German lagers. I agree that it isn't exactly 'complex' though... which lagers are?
Feckin' good value, the reason it was so cheap at Makro is that the sell by date is November 2008 - as if! Laughing
