I work in supported housing in Oldham, Lancs and am happy to report that one of our service users has been selected for the squad to represent England (despite the fact that he is actually Portuguese) at the Homeless World Cup in Melbourne later this year.
We may yet have a second service user (again of Portuguese origin) in the squad but will not know for a few more weeks.

nice event! I saw it a couple of years back in Graz, when austria was represented by a squad of asylum seekers. That was great enough, but if I remember correctly, by doing that, they somehow exploited a grey-area in the austrian legislation that says that as soon as you participate in (or win - cause that is what they did) an official international competition for austria you can basically claim citizenship... hehe...
Couldn't find a link though.... |

Haven't got a clue what you're on about pal!
As a footnote to my original post, we only have the one service user (who I'm now happy to report, is no longer homeless and his is own tenancy with Oldham MBC), that made the final squad.
One of my colleagues managed to blag his way over though - jammy bugger! |

I remember a few years back a homeless guy from St Pauli was in the German homeless team that played in the world cup.
It's actually amazing how talented some homeless guys are. An old friend of mine was living rough in Cardiff, but now lives in a hostel for alcoholics, was once a very good marathon runner. Ironically he hit the bottle after giving up his job to concentrate on running. He recently wrote an advert for the Halifax BS which was broadcast on TV and earns his money by busking and selling the Big Issue.
In the late 70s I lived in a hostel for the homeless, working as a volunteer in Exeter and Crediton. There were several former businessmen there, who had been very succesful before becoming homeless. One guy there was a drummer with a leading rock band (I think it was the Troggs), until he lost the use of an arm, then hit the bottle and became a drug addict.
