Would there be an interest for a scarf or pendant for forum members? I was in St Pauli last weekend for the game against Oberhausen and had requests from 2 bar staff at different pubs for a scarf/pendant to go on the wall of the pubs. They were both really impressed that there were so many fans from the UK supporting their team.

A sticker would also be a good idea (I like the Kingswood Pirate's viking sticker in the St Pauli Eck).

One possibility

At Liverpool we have a campaign called 'keep Flags Scouse' and a hit squad that has been known to go round at Euro aways nicking & destroying the few flags with St George Cross, Union flag, or flags with irrelevant place names like "Buxton Reds" etc. Such items are not part of our culture, and the message soon gets across to newcomers who bring them. Such flags are ever more rare these days as a result.
A few exceptions are tolerated when it's a flag that has real creative humour & Scouse references like the "Norwegian Wools" one that some of the Norwegian fans take to every Euro match....

I don't mean this is directly relevant to a club like St Pauli that rightly has loads of international antifa admirers, 'cos clearly it´s great if (some ?) St. Pauli supporters are proud to have UK fans, but just that I personally wouldn't want any reference to the UK on a scarf, badge, T-shirt, sticker or anything, unless maybe it was self-deprecating / deprecating to the UK / deprecating to the concept of national borders / and/or was just very funny Smile

[Just my personal opinion like, and hopefully said with the humility approriate for a relative newbie here.]

so, who decides what is part of your culture? Sounds rather arrogant and consernative to me.

Re the scarves - I was hoping the board members would like the idea, and design a scarf so it would be accepted as an official scarf. Just an idea.

As for the reference to the UK - that's part of our name! Personally I am a republican and would like the immediate abolition of the royal family (and of the Labour party, who are more right-wing than the Tories) and installation of proper regional governments. It's not likely to happen though, and I'd not lose too much sleep if a scarf contained the letters UK.

I'd admit that like Nige, the St Georges Cross flags arent really my cup of tea, thats not featured here and I think some reference to our geographical location is alright. Ive always found it quite interesting to see where everyone has made it from to watch my team (just as well being a United fan -FCUM or MUFC!). More recently I also saw this scarf...

...which amused me.

I'd buy the scarf suggested, however if the use of UK is going to raise eyebrows maybe "Die Insel ist Braun-Weiss" could be put in?

Either way if there is interest maybe a slight markup with the profit donated to a decent cause?[/quote]

"Die Insel ist Braun-Weiss"

I like it. Made me smile. I'd run with that and "FC ST Pauli", I don't mind the UK thing but like your suggestion even more.

How about the Fanladen benefiting from any profit?

Very Happy it's really good, question is how you will make clear which island you mean? Just for helping you brainstorming: why don't you try to find something with "international" as the forum is frequented mainly by UK folks but there are some from other regions as well?

and a question: why didn't anyone register an easier to memorise domain name and let it point to the forum? Or is there one and I just don't know? examples:
stpaulifans.co.uk
stpaulifans.com
stpaulifans.net
stpaulifans.org.uk

are all available and would be nicer to put onto a scarf then stpaulifansuk.forumup.co.uk. If you'd register it in the name of the Fanladen (who would have to be asked first....) problems such as those with the old UK domain name could be avoided.

I dunno, the Germans just seem to refer to us as the Island the whole time. Not too sure why but I always find it kind of nice.

Anyway regardless of whether that gets on having some kind of vanity URL for the messageboard, on the scarf would be a good idea. Mind you these things can be quite expensive. Mods? Any ideas on a cost?

Whatever happens, I like the idea. Count me in.

ah, ok, you're right. the problem might be that the context is not clear when there's just a scarf at the wall but a small .uk link beneath could help...

just checked, though I'm not a mod ;). a .com address is 5.70 Euro for a year, .uk 19 Euro for 2 years.

The Never Mind the Bollocks/Totenkopf design Sanktic came up with, I thought, was spot on. At one fell swoop its irreverent depiction of HM got rid of a lot of the uneasiness many of us feel about using the term UK. I asked about getting this on some T-shirts, but sadly there weren't sufficient pixels. It would still be fine for stickers though. Does anyone out there know how it could be enlarged to make it suitable for T-shirt printing?

The "UK" topic has come up before.

Just to clarify - I set up the Message Board because the last one ceased to exist when Canary1 died. I thought we should have our own forum and I stuck UK on there to give it a separate identity. (I didn't think for a minute that it might offend anybody, and I'll happily change our name if we can agree on what to change it to!!!)

Astro, you are talking about domain names for websites. If I had the vaguest notion on how to build a website I would do as you suggest and build one - incorporating a message board. ForumUp created these bog-standard message boards which are, technically, free and come with their name included. There's nothing I can do about it.

The last contact I had with Urbs suggested he was trying to build a new St.Pauli website but I've heard no more.

For all it's short-comings ForumUp has served us well (over 850 members so far). There is little work involved for me and Roger (apart from fucking-off the spammers and the odd gobshite) and several other sites include us in their links.

As I said I'll cheerfully lose the UK bit if an alternative title can be agreed on.

John x
