St Pauli and Southend have agreed to a partnership, and to the regular exchange of young players and trainers.

Jan Rieck, a German (presumably) who has lived in England for 22 years, has been instrumental in setting up the partnership. His son Gordan plays for Southend U18s, and will go to St Pauli with other young players at the end of October.

Stefan Winkel and Petar Filipovic, who play St Pauli U19s, have already gone to Southend, and will stay for a week. The St Pauli U17 and U19 trainers will visit Southend in January.

It is hoped the young players will gain valuable life-experience and improve their English in the visits (WHAT - in Sarfend!!).

So, a chance to see some St Pauli players a little nearer home.

They've added some 10,000 to the average attendance!

I ve read something about it on the official website

Pleased to see such exchanges.

Is Hamburg twinned with any British city by any chance?

no, which is a bit of a surprise as the city itself has so many links to Britain

good to see this happening, but this info seems a bit over the top Wink

....which has seen their fanbase regularly sell-out their 32,000-capacity Millerntor Stadium, even during their recent spell in the third tier.

Jan Rieck, who helped to instigate the partnership, takes up the story: "Even in the Third Division, St. Pauli averaged 30,000 gates.

erm...no Laughing

Well, I'd prefer Brentford as we are fans-owned, and there are more than a few St Pauli people related to the club.

Nothing against Southend, mind (except I doubt they are fans-owned). I'm up for any links.

I have tried, and I'll try again, but I guess my written German isn't good enough.

I don't have a problem with Southend at all, other than to reiterate that the obvious focus is for St Pauli to engage with a fans-owned club.

Er... like Brentford.

Coo... you're hard work, aren't you Les? I'd appreciate your getting off my case.

Failing that, how about we meet up at Brownstock ?

No probs Pete. I'm not on your case - check out the wink - I'm like this with everyone... What did sanktic call me? a grumpy misanthropic grumpy person. Laughing
You really can't be sensitive when I'm about, I'm worse in real life than on the board. Ask Waddock!
Hopefully I'll be at Brownstock, unless I manage to make Duisburg for the game on Wednesday, then It will have to wait.....

I don't think this has much to do with fan connections, this really is about an exchange on a sporting level, i.e. is does require people on football levels to make a connection.

Which is what happened.

You'd be buzzing if you got to exchange either way! Having no footballing skill whatsoever I can only imagine, but I reckon growing up as a youth player must be quite an insular existence - evenings spent at training rather than with your mates, potentially doing post 16 years education remotely not actually in school. And then bang, the chance to go and play in another country! Sounds ace!
