Looks like Ryanair as of August 1st are stopping flights from P/Wick to Lubeck.

Not good news for Celtic/St. Pauli fans.

Am I paranoid or did anyone else feel they were trying to run this down by stealth? After switching flight departures to a time with no public transport you felt the writing was on the wall. on a related note has anyone heard any rumours of an airline looking to fill the vacuum of Hapag-Lloyd ditching the Edinburgh to Hamburg route? From what I've heard this route was successful in terms of passenger numbers, but the airline decided to pull out for "operational reasons". Or are we going back to the good old days of praying your Easyjet flight to Stansted gets you there in time for your Lubeck connection?

Edinburgh to Gatwick is also an option, it's still a bit of a trek but at least from Gatwick you can get straight into Hamburg

Air Berlin fly from Manchester to Hamburg (more expensive though) and also bit of a trek from Scotland. Probably easier, Edinburgh - London - Hamburg.

So do Lufthansa and having looked, you can often get flights for under £70 return.[/quote]

Is that not maybe because they're re-thinking their times/days rather than giving up the route all together. I tried to book on their site for dates 6 months in the future and it wasn't playing ball. Maybe a technical hitch? rather than pulling the plug. Anyway if they do pull the route, I'm throwing a major strop, so that should re-instate it Wink

No they are definitly cancelling the flight. Want to introduce one between lubeck and Breslau instead.
Another option is to fly prestwick - dublin - lubeck. Thats what my plan is at least.

A new route opening in june 06 is edinburgh to hamburg. Its on ba connect and starts at £45 single. So £90 return isnt too bad.

That's good news about the BA Connect flights, although I was hoping one of the cheaper carriers might have stepped in. Having just looked at their site it looks like the cheapest return is likely to be around the £90 quid mark including taxes. I notice they only operate 3 days, Wed, Friday and Sun, but luckily the timings mean the Friday flight gets you in with plenty of time for the evening kick-offs and Sunday gives you enough space to get back from the Millerntor to the airport after the game. It's just a pity we won't be seeing any more £35 return flights with HLX/Ryanair from Scotland, but I suppose you will get food served up by snootier than average cabin crew and you will also avoid the depressive effects of hanging around Lubeck airport on the way back.

On a related note I came across this offer where if you sign up for A BMI credit card and use it once, you get 20000 airmiles which can be used on Lufthansa as well as BMI flights. I've just stuck in an application and will let you know if it works OK:

BMI flight to Russia. Grab a BMI classic credit card* (not to be confused with the BMI card) and you get 20,000 BMI miles. This is enough for a return flight to its zone 2 category, which includes Russia and other destinations of a similar length. However, you do need to pay taxes and charges – for example, on a flight to Turkey these total £52. There’s nothing stopping a couple getting a card each so both can fly together.

One important note, when you click through to the site it doesn't actually say you get 20,000 points, but the BMI card has confirmed in writing that you do and this will be honoured. The 20,000 points is enough to get you a return to its 'zone 2' destination, via BMI itself or its Star Alliance partners.

I must take you to task here, whilst Luebeck airport is very small and some distance from Hamburg, the bar/restaurant there is one of the best airport catering outlets I have experienced, and far from depressive.

Was there at the weekend and there is no longer an airport shop nor is there anything at all in the departure area. They have plastic cups of tea, coffee and water should you require it, two intenet pods and that's it. It was THE most depressing departure lounge I have ever been in.

That's why I stay in the bar and don't go through to departures too early. Even once I 've gome through security, if it still too early I spend some time in the shop area before going through passport control.
