New book out titled, The Black Hammers (the voice of west ham's ebony heroes) by Brian Belton. The book is endorsed by the Let's Kick Racism Out of Football campaign.
It mentions about West Ham leading the way in introducing Afro-Caribbean players to English football but at the same time their own fans were throwing bananas and making monkey noises at opposition players who happened to be black. It also touches on Black players coming into the hammers squad about the time of significant change in the growing ethic population in London's Docklands.
Foreward by Clive Best and Kriss Akabusi.

Has anyone read Neil Lennon's auobiography called, I believe, something like "Man and Bhoy"?
I haven't read it but remember reading a critique of it in a Mental Health journal. The reviewer praised Lennon for his open-ness in writing about his 'demons.'

I've read it. Not amazing but pretty decent by the standard of footballer biographies. Usually I pick them up in Waterstones or wherever, flick through a few pages and quickly decide it's not worth the bother. They don't get as far as the till! Lenny's is worth a look though. I got it out the local library, but I guess it is less likely to be found in your neck of the woods...

'Hundert Jahre Fahrstuhlfahrt' is a complete record of all St Pauli games up to 2007. Gives dates, scores, attendances and league tables so the fact that it's in German should be no problem. You will get it on Amazon.de or from the club shop. There is also a film dubbed into English called 'I Know Why I Stand Here' which follows St Pauli fans through a relegation season and is a 'must see' for anybody who wants to understand St Pauli. Unfortunately originals are extremely rare.

Anyone mentioned “Football Against Enemy” yet? Each chapter is a different club/country/subject and is fascinating.

The book about the St Pauli Fanladen also looks ace, although Ive only flicked through it.

Just going back through his thread... I read 'Out of his Skin' by Dave Hill (?) many years ago (got it out the library and have been meaning to get a copy to read again ever since). It is a good book, although I remember being annoyed that it was so Liverpool focussed, not mentioning much about his time at Watford - where, as an 11 year-old, he was my absolute idol.

Still reading Tor!, it's good, I'm learning a hell of a lot about German football, not much mention of St Pauli so far though.

The Damned United, is a must read, also enjoyed Back Home about the Mexico 70 world cup, and The Beautiful Team: In Search of Pele and the 1970 Brazilians by Garry Jenkins is also worth a read, he tries to interview all surviving members of the 1970 squad.

What's the book on the Fanladen? In german, I pressume?

Yeah its a German one I think, but I can't remember that well as its much more pictures than words. It basically has pretty much every major Ultra display thats been done at St Pauli. Im sure it also covers the other great work they do but I was looking at it in the queue in the fanshop so didnt have enough time to read it properly. The pictures are absolutely ace though. They've got versions of that and last years Season Review that you can thumb through in the club shop and I'd recommend doing so. Might purchase one next time!

Apart from explaining the origins of 'not established since 1910', the book only really refers to St Pauli as '...that radical club...' and doesn't go into much more detail than that. Still a brilliant read though!
