Yes, I read it a while back and I enjoyed it. I've probably got it knocking around somewhere, and can post it up to you if you're interested?

MODERN FOOTBALL IS RUBBISH

I’ve held of doing this cos I’m a bit shy and I didn’t want it to look like I was trying to do the hard sell. But Christmas is coming, and frankly we need to try and sell as many copies as possible.

So here it is, my tiny contribution to football literature:

Me and my best mate, Shaun, were spending far too long in the car park after five-a-side bemoaning the state of the modern game, so we decided to write it down. The book is a real mix of nostalgia for a bygone age (and yes, we openly admit it wasn’t as good back then as we like to think it was!) and half-cocked rants against the modern game.

I hope that our politics shine through, it is written from a broadly left-wing perspecitive (as you’d expect) but we did have to tone down certain bits.
St Pauli, or more specifically Benny Adrion gets a mention for his Viva Con Agua project. Obviously I was contractually obliged to include a reference to ‘Hells Bells’ when mentioning St Pauli. Sorry.

It’s an ideal Christmas stocking filler and the sort of book you can read on the bog – it’s supposed to be humorous and occasionally it is! And if you are between about 30 and 50, it will hopefully strike a chord.

FourFourTwo said: “The authors have hit the nail on the head with this poignant and thought-provoking book” (though we think they just cribbed this off amazon!) When Saturday Comes will be a different kettle of fish if they decided to review it.

And here’s a link to our most recent review:

You can buy the book in certain branches of Waterstones or WH Smiths or online:

Don’t buy it for the St Pauli mention – it’s only half a page, but if you are stumped for a cheap Christmas present idea…

Thanks!
Nico

Nice one Nico. You kept that one quiet!

I've only skimmed through one of the reviews just now but the mere mention of 'Mike's mini men' has most definitely grabbed my attention. Roy of the Rovers annual 1983. Oh yes!

As a mean Subbuteo-er myself that was a favourite of mine. Do you remember evil bully Lofty Mason's attempt to sabotage Mike's team by throwing his bag containing Subbuteo kit into the canal?

Good times.

Aaah, Mike's Mini Men!

Just like Billy Dane with his boots he was always losing his Subbuteo team. Was his team Redport Rovers? I know they wore the Melchester strip. What amazed me was all the kids in the story had massive garden sheds, that were big enough to house the pitch and about 20 onlookers! Lucky gits.

I've got to say I'm something of a Roy of the Rovers fanatic. Bought a load of back issues of eBay a while back - it was the most fun I've had in ages (I must get out more!).

If you like ROTR, you ought to read this book:

I read it and thought it was brilliant.

Nick,
I've just ordered your book from Amazon. It seems to be just up my street. Well done, I'm full of admiration. Cool Can't wait to read it...

Redstone Rovers Nico. We nicked Redstone and Lofty Mason's team Scarfield United for our league but they were lower league minnows in our Subbuteoland. Dunworth Town, Dartfield United and those bitter cross city rivals Coral City and United were the big guns in our league. Anyway, I've revealed too much. We were cool kids really. Honest...... Anxious Embarassed

I recently re-acquired that 1983 annual from eBay. It was as good as I remember!

Good luck with the book anyway. I'll certainly be getting a copy.

Without wishing to impinge on your sales, there's another book out at the moment called 'Teenage Flicks' that should appeal to those that used to flick to kick (ah, Feargal Sharkey, where did it all go wrong?). My copy is currently on its way:

Re. Feargal Sharkey, last time I heard of him, he was on the industry side of downloading music (in a proffesional way) Shame cos I loved the Undertones, and downloaded most of their stuff from limewire Wink

Nico's said it all about the book, so I can't really add anything description-wise. But just to say that I think it's brilliant (got my copy a while back), a great (and easy) read - something you can just dip into.

I would almost guarantee that it would appeal to pretty much anyone here. Go on, support one of our fellow St Pauli people - not for that reason, but because it's a damn good book
