There are very few examples of clubs reclaiming football from the grip of 'The Right' so the efforts of FC St.Pauli are especially commendable given the neo-nazi problem blighting German football. Further praise should be offered for the non-conformist and passionate nature of their support (examples of which are few in this age of tepid football backed as it is by day-trippers and corporates).

At FC United we've sought to win back football for the community and make a protest against the greed and opulence of modern day football. Intertwined with this is a genuine desire to make the club accessible to all sections of the community.

In many respects St.Pauli services as a model for FCUoM in terms of blending a passionate fan base with a politically charged spirit of resistance.. A number of our fans have featured on Redwatch and there have been a few occasions where BNP activists have sought to make themselves heard on match day - but they'll never 'conquer' FC..

And why did you play a friendly match against Lok Leipzig, a club run by an ex-hooligan and supported by fascists, then?

Sorry, I'm a bit harsh, but I'm really disappointed that this happened. Because I saw your Club as a great chance to achieve some tunraround in english football.

We played this game for two reasons:

1 - We wanted to help promote an anti-racist, anti-Nazi campaign
2 - We wanted to bolster LL efforts to tackle their neo-Nazi problem

Before the fixture was played a club representative went over to Germany and made an assessment of the situation. One of the key aims of the visit was to learn more about LL efforts to tackle racism/neo-nazi elements and to make sure an anti-racist message dominated the fixture.

I did raise concerns about this fixture but was assured a thorough assessment had been made and we had consulted with various anti-racists groups to 'authenticate' LL efforts.

Just to follow up on my earlier point, here's a copy of the exchange:

Read a Times Online feature on German hooliganism and there was a mention of Loko Leipzig's fans going in for synchronised swastika formations on the terraces. Not sure how factual all this is but my concern is that they have a strong far right following and if FC is associated with this then we'll be tarnished by association..

A representative of FCUoM was accompanied by a leading left wing/anti-racist German based Brit who is a bit of an expert on related issues.

If the game goes ahead there will be a big anti-racism back drop to it, and our liaison contact is more than happy for the clubs to link up on the basis of what he heard and saw.

People United Day - Update

Preparations for the October 28th fixture designated as People United Day in conjunction with FARE and Kick it Out are progressing well.

Schools & Junior Football Clubs

Bury local authority has contacted all its schools about our celebration. We have written to 250 schools in the Greater Manchester area, so check that your school will be making a banner by contacting a teacher or the headteacher. We already have news of junior football clubs and schools planning to make and bring their banners for 2.30pm. We would particularly encourage local junior football clubs to get involved with the day by bringing a banner and their junior players along to the match One Walkden school teacher saw our invite and decided immediately to bring members of his local club’s football teams along.

Other Groups

The club is especially pleased to see that ethnic minority groups in Bury and Manchester are set to attend. A few organisations have volunteered to sponsor asylum seekers coming to the game. In the week leading up to the match, the Community Development team will be in Bury coaching a group of asylum seekers and refugees who are keen on football.

Trade unions, colleges and youth clubs are also coming along. We have been invited into Bury College on October 18th to tell their 11,000 students about the club and the day, and a martial arts school is urging its 200 members to leap across our terraces.

Banners

Is your group’s banner ready for the parade? For those who want to make or improve their banners, we are holding a Banner-Making workshop between 11am and 4pm on Friday October 27th at Bury FC Social Club on Gigg Lane.

Youth Competitions

The October 28th Glossop North End fixture will also be the second of our Youth Competitions fixtures. On this occasion, we will not only be looking out for budding Picassos, we will also be seeking to find the game’s future reporters. So teachers and youth leaders should make sure their young people are up for it.

Age Categories: Under 12s and 12s to 17s.

Win a shirt signed by the whole first team squad for the Best Portrait of a player or event and a signed shirt for the Best Match Report at the game.

Entries with age of entrant to be received by November 9th by email to

or posted to Youth Competitions, FC United, 221 Ducie House, 37 Ducie Street, Manchester, M1 2JW. Decisions of the competition manager are final.

Winners will be announced at the home fixture with Stone Dominoes on Saturday, November 25th and invited to the game as guests of the club to receive their signed shirt presented by a player of their choice.

Saturday 28th October vs Glossop North End
Kick Off 3pm Gigg Lane, Bury
Admission: Adults £7, Over 60s £5, Under 18s Free

Under 18s Go Free

Following FC means having fun and involving ALL the community. We support Kick it Out and are urging everyone to bring their banners on the day because we believe all people should be able to enjoy football without fear of intimidation or abuse.

So – Come for 2.30pm, Fly the Flag, Bring Your Banners, Get the Buzz and Cheer on United.

Chatting to an FCUM fan (and fellow St Pauli fan) yesterday, I realised that there seems to be some 'ill feeling' from some sections of the Shakers faithful toward yourselves that I hadn't previously been aware of. (This also explains a somewhat, in my opinion 'over defensive' reply to a posting I made on a related thread; my comments were directed at what I saw as inconsistencies in the Guardian article related to Manchester's history rather than anything to do with the club specifically or football in general).
For the record, the only 'resentment' I've ever heard from Bury fans is the age old gripe that whilst we represent a Metropilitan Borough with a population of 185,000, our hardcore support is probably 1% (around 1800) of that whilst historically, many Bury residents have tended to support United or, to a slightly lesser extent, City. Basically we simply suffer because of our geographical location.
I'd like to say that, had I been a Man U supporter, my allegiance would now be firmly with yourselves. I applaud your efforts and achievements and wish you all the very best.

PS: Please see the Bury/St Pauli thread regarding the Trackside bar in Bury and my concerns that it seems to be becoming patronised by elements of the far-right.
May be one to pass on to Steve T.
Please feel free to PM me if you think the establishment may warrant a 'presence' on one of your/our home match-days

Im a United fan, I go to the FC bit.

First starting following St Pauli in 2000 when I went to HH on a daytrip from Kiel as I was thinking of going there for my uni placement year. Anyway I'd heard a bit about them and I couldnt quite believe a team played in brown (an underated colour)! Ended up buying a scarf from Karstadt Sport (how punk rock) and that was about it for the year. I ended up going back in 2001 for the year and as United could only be watched in highlight form on CNN and Laola on Eurosport I had plenty of time for St Pauli.

Since then its been following from afar but my girlfriend lives just north of HH so, despite being foiled by the snow or away games on previous visits, I hope I'll get to go back again. Well if they ever complete that stand!

Hi.. i used to be active in the antifa movement for many years so came across st pauli via that.(have not been any kind of `activist` for some years now). am planning my first trip to fcum with my wife this saturday so it got me interested in st pauli again as i saw elements of that spirit in the fcum thing.

Hope to have some good games and maybe meet some of the FCUM/St pauli folk.

Just got tickets for this game its more or less sold out 3,300 capacity so should be a great atmosphere, going as a neutral although a relative of mine may be playing for Fleetwood Town if he's fit...if I hear plenty of punk rock chants and you give of an anti-nazi/capitalism vibe I might watch your team again, get the Pauli flag up behind a goal then it can be seen on TV...enjoy
