I've been to winter sprinter a few times and I saw Broken Famiy Band as well. I liked them, but not enough to buy a CD.
I'm off to All Tomorrow's Parties in April, but apart from that my gig going is limited these days, prices in London are way too high |

I've been to see The Gossip tonight, the guy selling their tshirts is a season ticket holder at Millerntor.
Next weekend it's Eagles of Death Metal. |

wow, that's fantastic. was he German, English or what? Being an alternative dyke I am well into the Gossip, but didn't move fast enough for tickets.
I'm going to all tomorrows parties in april, then to see sonic youth perform my all time favourite 'daydream nation' live in August.
And Arcade Fire later this month. |

Got my ticket for the James Brown Tribute Concert at The Sage, Gateshead on Sunday the 6th May.
A night of pure funk enjoyment for £10. I know it's a way off in the future but if anyone on the board is going let me know.
Going to see Roy Ayers and Branford Marsalis during the jazz festival, end of this month/beginning of next, as well but I don't think we have too many jazz fans on the board? _________________ 'The tragedy of humanity is not in the script; the tragedy is that there is no script'

I've seen Roy Ayres at Ronnie Scott's a couple of times... let me know if he still does the joke about mistakenly eating grass in the dark when he's stoned and tries to go down on his girlfriend...
As for jazz, well, how does Thelonious Monk, Sun Ra and Ornette Coleman grab you? They were huge influences on Yamatsuka Eye of Japanese noiseniks "The Boredoms" apparently.
Check out the John Zorn punk-jazz-surf crossover "Radio" by Naked City. Or the wonderful version of "Harlem Nocturne" on the first album by the Lounge Lizards (featuring John Lurie and Arto Lindsay if that means anything to you).
Sometimes I wonder why I know this stuff too _________________ Lover, Poet, Philosopher, Drunk and Bore...All in five easy pint shaped pieces. |

I like John Zorn. Let me know if you ever hear of him coming to Britain. He's the guy who's Gay and in a relationship with the guy from Faith No More, isn't he? |

That's news to me... Do you mean Mike Patton of FNM and the marvellous Fantomas? _________________ Lover, Poet, Philosopher, Drunk and Bore...All in five easy pint shaped pieces. |

Udo,
1) will do, he's more jazz-funk than jazz, which I prefer actually
2)love The Monk and Ornette Coleman, not so keen on Sun Ra
3) punk-jazz-surf crossover? hmmm... I love the Jaco Pastorius compilation 'Punk Jazz' - a distillation of his entire output - but that's not what you mean I guess. Not sure whether I know John Zorn. Will certainly check him out though.
My favourites this month (in terms of albums listened to) are Weather Report, Miles (of course), Abram Wilson, Javon Jackson, Herbie Hancock, Courtney Pine, Stanley Clarke, Cassandra Wilson. Listening to 'Black Market' by Weather Report as I type.
Do Ronnie Scott's still do Reggae Night on a Sunday? I used to watch Desmond Dekker at The Cricketer's next to the Oval at Sunday lunchtime then Ronnie Scott's in the evening.

No, Roddy, he was the Gay one, wasn't he? But the news might be out of date now, they could have split up. |

Does this have any relevance whatsoever as to how good/bad his music is?
Don't take this the wrong way Alice, and it's certainly not meant to sound in any way homophobic, but one of the things that tends to put me off an artist slightly, before I've even heard their material, is when they are marketed (or in some cases market themselves) as a 'gay' artist. I, like most people these days I'm sure, don't give a flying f*** what someone's sexuality is and would judge an artist on his/her/their recorded output and live performance. I just think it's a bit of a cheap shot to wear one's sexuality on one's sleeve for the sake of publicity in this day and age. |

oh dont be to sure about it.... I discovered Jazz about 3 years ago and have spend since then a lot of time (and money ) to get closer to that special kind of music. My favorite so far is Kenny Dorham, not as popular as Miles or Coltrane but in my mind absolutley brilliant. I also like some of the Scandinavian stuff (E.S.T) but also some good old New Orleans Brass music.
Marsalis will be playing here in Hamburg in two weeks. I got my tickets months ago and guess what happened? The German FA has changed the St. Pauli fixture from Wdnesday to.....yes, Tuesday, the day of the concert. I really dont know what to do know.... |

well I'm Lesbian and yes, I do still get excited when I hear about Gay people in genre's I don't expect e.g. experimental jazz and Football!
Which it might be a stereotype on my part, but there are still some professions where Gays seem to be under represented and some where we are overly so (like pop music and Women's Tennis!)
And I wanted to make sure I had the write guy as all I know of him is a compilation tape done by a friend a few years ago who I don't see anymore, and who gave me this information about his private life.
So I don't think Zorn plays on it (or the fact that he's Jewish) it's just nice to hear these things, like, if he was str8 and did an interview with The Times, Time Out or whatever, instead of saying 'i met the artist in the beautiful loft apartment he shares in New York with his partner of 10 years, Mary, they might say the same but instead of Mary say Peter (or Roddy!)
And I remember being excited when the guy from Faith no More came out as it was a long time ago when it was still unusual, and the only ones that had come out were in pop bands and not rock or indie. I always liked alternative music, as it's really only been the last several years that a few gay places have started to play alternative stuff - even in London for years it was wall to wall Kylie or high energy/house before her in 99% of the places. |

@Olympiakos,
Sorry if I sounded a bit snobbish there that is absolutely NOT the impression I wanted to give. It happens too much in jazz circles & I hate it. It just seemed to me that most posts on this thread dealt with music other than jazz - I'm glad there are other jazz fans on the board after all. The Marsalis gig problem is a stinker. Elsewhere on the board you'll notice that I've fallen foul of 'enforced' changes of dates for games this season. _________________ 'The tragedy of humanity is not in the script; the tragedy is that there is no script'

Arcade Fire last night at Manchester Apollo. What can I say apart from that they were astonishingly good!
It's been a while since I've seen that kind of enthusiasm and passion on stage. Admittedly the material from Funeral came across better than the new album, Neon Bible, but that was probably because of familiarity from the audience who got involved more in those songs. What an atmosphere, topped off by an almost evangelical 'Wake Up' at the end.
