Get yourself an enormous Skull&Crossbone flag and put "St Pauli Villa" on it. That should wind them up

This is my first post. I'm an Aston Villa fan who runs a supporters' club in Barcelona. I've met a few FC St. Pauli fans over the years, and I've always admired the club. We have quite a few members going to Hamburg for the Villa- HSV game. A lot of Villa fans are staying in the St. Pauli area and have a soft spot for FC St. Pauli. I'd welcome any advice and recommendations regarding places to see, bars etc.

We've heard a few unpleasant things about the HSV hooligan firm. Is it true that they have a neo-fascist ultra group?

Best if luck to St. Pauli this season. Thanks for your help.

There's some scum in bars around the Hans Albers Platz e.g. in the Friedrichsstraße and Gerhardstraße. St.Pauli friendly pubs/bars in that area are the King Calavera and the Zum Silbersack. The bars/clubs along the street Hamburger Berg are worth a try as well. In that direction (north of the Reeperbahn) you'll find loads of other pubs often more traditional German ones and usually no HSV at all. The St.Pauli ground is at the Heiligengeistfeld, further down the road you'll find the Jolly Roger (St.Pauli supporters pub) etc. - all friendly places for friendly people. Cool There's a dedicated thread on this forum for places to eat and drink.

Other places to see at this time of the year (not the weather for the beach really) wd b the harbour and the Christmas Market in the city center.

Kieran - you might want to check out Schlemmer Eck on the corner of Hamburgerberg and Seilerstrasse. It's where we normally spend our time in Hamburg, and the gaffer (Herbert) is a star. It's got Blues and Villa scarves up, but obviously we've asked him to take the Blues scarf down whilst you're in town.

You'll be made more than welcome there.

There's also the Villa Kunter Bunt on Hamburgerberg. I can't think why I suggest that one...

Astro and Chris, thanks very much for your advice and help. Try and stay cear of any nazi scum. The Villa Kunter Bunt does sound interesting for some reason. We've got a couple of articles on FC St. Pauli on our blog.

Yeah - keep away from the 'London Pub" on Hans Albers Platz. I have heard the 'Villa Hardcore' - many of whom have links with C18 / BNP - are looking at meeting their HSV counterparts for a nazi love in.

In any case, have a great time in Hamburg!

just had a look at your blog and right on the first page is that picture of the Jolly Roger. The guy with the glasses is a friend of mine we stand next to each other most matches. Very Happy

you asked about HSV ultras being neo-nazi. Though they don't consider themselves ultra, the CFHH (Chosen Few Hamburg) might be the group you mean. That's not a neo-nazi group though there might be quite a few right wing arseholes among them.

Got you some google map links:

that's Hans Albers Platz mostly HSV dominated (London Pub, Tankstelle in the Gerhardstraße, some pubs in the Friedrichstraße). Exceptions in that area: King Calavera (Rock'n'Roll, Punk & Metal club, no admission fee) at the south end of the place and the Silbersack in the Silbersackstraße (dodgy German "Schlager" music from the jukebox, cheap beer).

The area north of the Reeperbahn is much more friendly. I centered this link on Hamburger Berg

There you'll find the Schlemmer Eck and loads of small bars/clubs all without admission fee, quite mixed music and open til the morning (never managed to stay in Ex-Sparr til they closed and I left them as late as 7 or 8 am). Just around the corner e.g. Hein-Hoyer-Straße are more small boozers.

Good Turkish restaurants in that street, best for my taste is Büryan. Try the Adana Kebap.

The grill "Kleine Pause" - traditional German fast food (though they need a bit longer sometimes) of excellent quality for a good price. Try the Bruce Bacon Burger and the Currywurst (curry sausage) and you won't go to McDonalds ever again. And it's just 100 meters from the Jolly Roger and the St.Pauli ground.

PS: St.Pauli - as you know - is a red light district. Best adult shop should be the Boutique Bizarre at the Reeperbahn. Be careful with most of the strip shows etc. - some are a rip-off. Susi's Showbar and the Dollhouse can be considered "tourist safe" locations.

I love Hans Albers (the infamous German singer), and Zum Silbersack is one of the best places to play his songs and sing along with the regulars. Lovely bar, run by Erna Thomson for more than 50 years.

The Villa Kunterbunt is an interesting bar - not all of the pretty young ladies ladies there are actually female - but that makes it all the more exciting!

Take care in the Elbschloss Keller and Zum Goldenen Handschuh on Hamburger Berg. I followed a practically topless women into the Handschuh. I sat at the bar, another women approached me, started rubbing her bits into me , then said, shit, and her husband appeared in the bar! Pleased to meet you mate, I thought, as I left very quickly ..

More of the same in the EK. A women asked me if I liked jogging - I looked puzzled and asked her what she liked doing - "Ficken" was her reply. Yes, that. Never a dull moment in St Pauli.

Hans Albers and photos of the Villa Kunterbunt, Elbschlos Keller, Zum Silbersack and Zum Goldenen Handschuh, amongst others on the clip below.

I'd recommend some of the bars on Davidstrasse. The Steirer Stüberl at the harbour end is wonderful. Run by Herbert, a friendly snuff-taking Austrian. Wonderful food, and he makes a brain-numbing Jagatee.

The Rattenkeller, a cellar bar, is tremendous, as is Zum Anker, the infamous bar on the corner of Herberstrasse.

Thanks Toom, Astro and Chris again for your recommendations, very kind of you all.

Chris, thanks for the warning about the London Bar. I asked my question about the HSV neo-fascist group as I've heard rumours that they are out to get black and mixed race Villa fans.

Forza St. Pauli.

I've also heard that "Black' Danny and the Villa C-Crew will be out there, so could make things, erm, interesting if any racists try it on. But I also understand that as the right wing Villa Hardcore are going out, best advice is to keep well away from any vaguely English pubs or boozers on the Reeperbahn itself. I hate all that hooligan bollocks - I just hope it passes off without any grief or stupidity.

But as I say you'll be right as rain in Schlemmer Eck. A few of my mates will be in there, in particular Jimbo. I know he'd be happy to show you the Hamburg ropes.

And as Astro says, Klein Pause and Buyron are indeed fantastic. Well worth a peek. I really like the area behind the Millerntor called Sternschanze as it's very relaxed. I also think you can get the S-Bahn from Sternschanze to the Hamburg ground

From a purely tourist perspective, if you get the chance, by an all day pass on the u-bahn and go down to Landesbrucken. You can get ferries up and down the Elbe as part of your pass, and it's well worth seeing the sheer size of the docks.

That's the U-Bahn, the U3 to be exact. Sternschanze Arrow Feldstrasse (for the North of the stadium) Arrow St. Pauli (for the South) Arrow Landungsbrücken (for the harbour).

You should definitely do a trip around the harbour if you get the chance. It's well worth seeing.
