No connection with St Pauli, just great music. Levon Helm made his name as the Band's drummer. In 1997 he had throat cancer and had to learn how to speak again. His voice now is rawer and his 2007 album Dirt Farmer is an incredibly moving work.

I have "Dirt Farmer" myself and it does indeed sound good. I have a late 70s (vinyl) Levon Helm solo album ("American Son") too that I shall have to dig out again (now that I've finally got a turntable).
On a 'triv' note, Helm, hailing from Arkansas, was the only non-Canadian in The Band. |

and what a voice he had - my personal favourite of the three band vocalists. plus, if the rumours are to be believed, he's an absolute gentleman.
think i need to get a quick fix of the last waltz on you-tube now... _________________ Can you still have any famous last words if you're somebody nobody knows?

Great voice; though Danko did it for me; especially on "Makes No Difference" which is probably somewhere in my top ten all-time tracks.
Another bit of 'triv' is that Helm wasn't on Dylan's (in)famous 'Judas' UK tour, being temporarily replaced by Mickey Jones (another American) |

yeah, i'd heard that - didn't he get fed up with the abuse and go back to working on oil rigs? anyway, just for you shakers, a clip of rick in his prime, before the egos got out of hand: Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! |
i.m.h.o., as band members, they were all equal parts of the whole - as soon as r.r. left, that was it. i loved levon's voice the most because only he could have sang 'the night they drove old dixie down', 'cripple creak' and 'w.s. walcott medicine show.'
i think i'm right in saying waddock's a bit of a band fan - i think it must have been their counter counter-culture life-style - perhaps we're all neo-luddites!
i can't watch too much of the last waltz - i find it a really, really sad film to watch - soft bastard that i am.
but this clip of levon and the band, courtesy of marvin gaye, gets me every time. enjoy: Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! |

Great clips! thanks!
The 'odd man out' in The Last Waltz for me is Neil Diamond; though undoubtedly he wrote some great songs.
Here's Ol' Rick taking the lead on "Make's No Difference"

i know what you mean about neil diamond but i quite like the tune he plays - i read in an interview that he felt himself to be the odd man out on the night as well, and was a bit worried about how the crowd would react to him.
unfortunately the link led me to a 'browsing' page, which contained several women wishing to share their sexy secrets with me, spurs in the uefa cup (shambles and you're going down) and what appears to be our very own sir roger, complete with false beard and hat, celebrating 'talk like a pirate day'.
quite a creditable performance roger! Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! |
