Has anybody tried 'Spingo Ales' at the Blue Anchor in Helston (Cornwall)? Wonderful beer and a rare traditional pub, largely unchanged for the last 30 years.

I went there around 1984, when I was in Cornwall to run in the Duchy of Cornwall marathon. I had 3 pints of Extra Special the day before the marathon, and spent the marathon in my mate's car, with his wife driving around the course, with me cheering everybody on - too hungover to run!
I didn't go again until February this year. It had hardly changed. They didn't have the Extra Special on tap unfortunately, but I had 2 pints of Special. No marathons these days, so no limit on the amount. Highly recommended, friendly staff and customers, and good food.
I'll be going back in May, staying at Mullion. If anybody fancies a cheap break in Devon/Cornwall/Scotland/Wales - have a look at Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! |
See the holidays tab (£9.50 pp for up to 4 nights). _________________ Der Junge von St. Pauli der hat die Welt geseh'n

Not been, but will go soon. Just bought a Dahon folding bike, so can take it on the train to Bath, then on to the village.

The Double Locks nr Exeter is also worth a visit. You can cycle along the towpath from Exeter to the pub (about 2 miles), then chain the bike to the bike bars. Lots of real ales straight from the barrel.

AT LAST!!!!
I can finally contribute to this forum.
I believe I have actually visited this pub - a jobbing actor doing a week at the local Theatre (The Northcott?) - many years ago.
You'll all be thrilled to know that I drank lager.

Well done John! Nothing wrong with a cold lager!
I was in the Old Green Tree a few weeks back - lovely ales, the dark porters (Station Porter, Mr Pecketts Stout) were excellent.
Some good old boozers in London too - love the Ship in Soho - just right for the cinemas and clubs (!) and the Doric Arch outside Euston - Fullers ESB til you drop. _________________ Der Junge von St. Pauli der hat die Welt geseh'n

The Blue Anchor is a great pub. It is only one of two pubs that have featured in Camras Good Beer Guide in every single year of it's publication.
Toom, I live in Exeter and I have to say that the Double Locks has gone badly down hill over the last two or three years. Far better option is The Turf Lock which is about another two miles down the towpath. The best pub in Exeter itself is The Hour Glass and if you're happy to jump on the train for a couple of stops to Newton St Cyres the Beer Engine is an excellent pub that has its own micro brewery downstairs - booootiful _________________ freedom without Socialism is privilege and injustice...
