Sadly I think you are about right with espanyol, however I believe there is a non-political ultra group there now too who are gradually gaining influence. Can't remember their name now as I read about them in a mates copy of united we stand (I think). As their purpose suggests they aren't right wing so minght be worth reading about. |
thanx for that info mate, where can i get a copy or find a copy of that magazine you mention here, i would really like to read up about them on there _________________ If you can't remember and stand by your roots then it's time you hung up them boots, i hate nazis and racist c*nts |

Well as I said, Im pretty sure it was in United We Stand (its a Manchester United fanzine) and was really about the rightwing ultras at Barcelona - Boixos Nois. I can't guarantee though that it was there I read it (it mightve been in Sid Lowes column in the Guardian) but if it was it was issue 184. Either way its probably not worth investigating too hard as all the non-political Espanyol ultras got was a mention (about a sentence).

It mightve been the Jove lot mentioned in this article (quite interesting reading actually) but I can't say for certain. _________________ Geschunden durch den (Hamburg) Sport Verein....Samstag ist Selbstmord |

Still my favourite ever away trip in Europe with Celtic. We were made to feel very welcome by the locals and enjoyed a good few beers with some lads who I think were probably some of those behind the above link.
Just as (more?) importantly, it was that trip that fully turned me on to St Pauli as on the first night in Vigo we met a group who had travelled from Hamburg. My first night's drinking with St Pauli fans but definitely not the last! |

Was talking to my pal about that game today, cos it was when the polis batten charged the celtic fans outside the stadium or airport, I can't remember which. We'd got to Vigo two days before the game, as ye do, and found out that there was an anti-government march taking place due to the inaction in controlling the oil spill of that tanker that had broke up off the Galician post. Anyways, we turned up at the march in the hoops, as did 100 odd other Celtic lads happy to protest against the spanish govt, more over the Basque issue then anything else, and mostly clad in the hoops. One of our guys had a flute with him, so the organisers put him in front of the march playing away with all us hoopers behind.
We were only on all the main news programs that nite, and front pages of all the papers the next day, and we beleive that it pissed off the govt and cops enough to stage the next day's attack, I kid ye not.
Unfortunately or fortunately, we missed the attack due to our respect for the Galicians bar prices meaning that we hardly left the pub matchday, part for the game, when we went in the home end. I thought Celtic had won until about two years after, when I found out it had been a draw |

Aye there was a bit of bother at both the stadium and the airport I think. Didn't see what happened at the airport as it happened late at night after the match when all the charter flights were leaving - we had made our own way via Madrid so weren't flying out until the following afternoon.
The bother at the stadium was due to them only having 2 little turnstiles open for the whole of the Celtic section (one whole side stand). Queues started building up and folk were getting restless. This was the match following the debacle at Blackburn where a lot of folk had been sold forged tickets and the police shut the gates saying the stand was full leaving a lot of people locked out. A wee bit of pushing started from behind, so the police just decided to start randomly belting the people at the front of the queue with their batons. I was lucky enough to have walked through the turnstile just as it started - the guys immediately behind me in the queue got a smack.
I think both incidents were partly due to the authorities in Vigo not really being geared up for the sheer number of fans. That said, the Spanish police are utter shitebags and are never slow to get stuck into footie fans in my experience. I was also really lucky to avoid a baton to the chops in Valencia. I'd got separated from the group I was with and ended up enjoying a few beers and a good chat with a couple of local lads at a bar near the stadium before the match. There was a whole row of bars along this street in the shadow of one of the big stands there (amazing stadium btw - go before they knock it down if you haven't been). All the bars had seats and tables outside and there was a good mix of Celts and locals enjoying the craic. Then a couple of police vans roar up and the riot squad pile out, fully tooled up, helmets, shields, batons. My new friends signalled that we'd better move inside pronto, but I slipped. Luckily I was dragged through the door by the armpits just in time. The police just tore right along all these bars, laying about them randomly with the batons, and then piled back in the vans and buggered off again - sport over. It was all over in less than 2 minutes.
Funnily enough at the UEFA Cup Final in Seville they must have been told to be on their best behaviour - showpiece event, eyes of the World on us and all that - and though of course there was a massive police presence they kept themselves in their vans and not a bit of bother happened the whole time. |

A lot of they police are from S. America and join up to get the spanish/EU passport. Alot of them in the north are from andalucia, the most deprived area of that country. I think their excesses are an effort to prove their allegiance. How great they were in Seville mind, they must of been under strict orders to behave, with the media coverage etc.
Celtic ever play in madrid there will be war with them bastardos.
This was funny mind:
