Greets Bazza,

A Redskins fan eh ! remember them when i was in my younger years,
still got a couple of the 12" singles around.

Remember seeing them in 1984/ish when they played at the GLC
annual bash in County Hall.

They played early afternoon in the County Hall car park(F**k me what an exotic setting that was ) i stood around on the edges and Chris Dean was getting abuse from some skins in the crowd, so he stopped and answered the guy back.

Next thing these skins had invaded the stage and all hell broke loose, never seen so many people move so quick in my life..

Later that night the Smiths were main attraction on and they were just
electric...

As to my top 10-haven't got a list but particular faves are;
1. The Smiths- First album

2. Ian Dury- Do It Yourself.

3. Steely Dan- Aja

4-Supercharge- Local Lads make good.

5. Prefab Sprout- Swoon

6.The The- Soul Mining

7. Teardrop Explodes- Kilimanjiro

8. Zombies- Odyssey and Oracle.

9. Paul Young-No Parlez ( don't take the piss here....)

10. The Undertones- The Undertones.

Wasn't as difficult as i thought....

Blimey, what a small world. I was at that GLC day too. It kicked off big time I remember. The Redskins were a great band. I've got loads of their stuff on vinyl. None on cd though.

My top ten is ever changing. Here is what I'm listening to at the moment though. No particular order:

1. The Boy With The Arab Strap - Belle and Sebastian
2. Alligator - The National
3. Chutes Too Narrow - The Shins
4. Government Sessions - Mogwai
5. Mr Beast - Mogwai
6. For Blood and Empire - Anti-Flag
7. Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain - Pavement
8. Rockin' The Suburbs- Ben Folds
9. Copper Blue - Sugar
10. The Complete Fall Peel Sessions - The Fall

My favourite albums are always the ones I'm listening to currently.

I've got a bootleg of the Redskins set at the GLC Jobs For A Change gig and you can hear all the trouble kicking off towards the end of their set.

The guy that was abusing Chris Dean got an answer back from Chris

"You sound just like F*****g Maggie Thatcher" then all hell broke loose

with mikestands and instruments flying around during the invasion.

Quite extraordinary..

May even dig out the 12" singles and give them an airing..

Great version of Kick over the statues ! (Can't stop the redskins) on the NME cassette Dept of Enjoyment as well.
Some great stuff on there as well, Smiths, Lloyd Cole, Cocteau Twins, Nick Cave, Robert Wyatt , African Connexion.

I think that version of Kick Over The Statues on the tape is from the Redskins first Peel session.

I posted a few videos of the Redskins on Youtube -

And I also put out a Redskins tribute CD last year -

It seems that a lot of American bands are influenced by the Redskins even though they never tour or released any records over there.

Bazza,

I've been trawling around your Redskins website, nice one. It's brought back loads of really good memories of a truely fabulous band. I will be buying Neither Washington Nor Moscow on cd from Amazon this week.

Do you remember The Old Grey Whistle Test showing a Redskins gig in the mid-eighties? I think it was from the Hammersmith Palais. Can't quite remember though. I taped it on video at the time but alas it is long gone now.

It was from the Town & Country Club. The Whistle Test only showed 1 song from the gig + a joke by Ted Chippington. However, Radio 1 broadcast about 6 songs from the gig. The video off the Whistle Test is on YouTube.

Rumour has it that he jacked in comedy to become a lorry driver.
There's some more info about Ted Chippington at the following website -

Ted was a neighbour of mine when I lived in new X in the early 1990's. He gave up the comedy to look after his sick daughter if I recall correctly.
